IronMan, Iron Mom, Iron Girl? I should do a triathlon? Me? Are you kidding?
Apparently, the nice folks at Iron Girl are not kidding. They are sponsoring me for their Athleta Sprint Triathlon in Portland, OR on June 26th. So, I’m being brave and taking the plunge!
This “Sprint Tri” race course consists a half mile swim, a 22 mile bike ride, and a 5K run. I think I can do it. I mean, I know I can do it.
Iron Girl thinks I can do it. Thousands of women all over the country are doing their races, and loving them! In fact, Iron Girl is so sure I’ll do this thing, that they’re even sending me a wet suit for the lake swim. So I won’t whine about being cold, probably.
As part of the deal, I’m supposed to wear the wet suit. And no, I can’t wear a skirt over it to hide the lumpy parts. I’d like to pretend I’m not vain or self conscious, but I think you all know better by now. So, I’ve decided it’s high time I take up Yoga and Pilates for real, to see if I can get the Gwyneth Paltrow look going for me. I’ve got six weeks.
Let’s just see how it goes, shall we?
I’m smart enough to know I can’t do this on my own. I say it takes a village to train an a Triathlete, and I do like a party, so I’m making my friends help me do this thing.
We’re hosting a free workshop for anyone else who’ wants to learn about training for a Triathlon. If you’re in Eugene, OR join us on May 7th at 1:30 over at Just Breathe, at 2868 Willamette St. You can RSVP on our Meetup page, or just show up. Bring friends!
If you’re not in Eugene, join us here on the blog to follow along on the training plan and view the sure-to-be-ridiculous movies of me learning to ride a bike with shoe clips, attempting to stuff myself into a wet suit, dancing, jumping in lakes, etc. Oh, it will be a riot, I’m sure.
Also, there will be prizes. We’ve got some schwag to give away, stay tuned!
Here’s my @juliejulie does a Triathlon support group – uh, I mean Village – so far:
Coach Robin, my co-sponsoree over at Every Mom to Iron Mom, has appointed herself as my official cheerleader, and she’s going to do an Iron Girl race later. She has her own wet suit, and her own bike, and will guide me through the getting ready to swim, bike and run all in one day part of this race.
The ever-positive Pilates, Yoga, Nia Dancing Queen Mandy, over at Just Breathe Movement Studio will help me get my inner and outer core in shape. And she swears I’ll have fun in the process. She already taught me to shimmy, so I think we’re on the right track.
My friend Connie Austin, the Pied Piper of enthusiasm for all things running over in Bend, OR, loaned me her Lite Speed bike to train with. Her online community at Learn to Run for Fun is a virtual galaxy of fun people who ooze encouragement.
And then there are my buddies from the Chubby Mommy Running Club, Rebekah and Laurel, who are thinking they may just join me at Iron Girl in Portland, and remind me to keep showing up for running club, and for life.
So, I guess I’m all in.
No, make that I AM all in!
Let’s do this thing, people.
