Join the Club

Here's the first social meet up in Eugene, Oregon. Let's do one in your town, too!

Would you like to help start a Chubby Mommy Running Club in your area? If so, click on the MeetUp badge on the home page of my blog (or click here!) and then press the red “I’m interested!” button when you get there. Your home town should show up automatically. Then, email me and we’ll figure out how to find a place to meet, people and sponsors! My email: julieanderson (at) hotmail (dot) com

We have 12 (that’s Twelve!) CMRC’s across the country so far. Ignore the Meetup widget, if you’re counting on it. Glitch: it only shows the Meetups that haven’t met yet. We have about 50 people in Eugene so far, and active groups in Newport News, VA and St. Clair, MO. Hang with us on Facebook!

I know many of us are intimidated to walk into a running store to meet strangers to run with, so I’m starting a monthly “Social” meetup time first, just to get to know each other. If you know of a store, a business, a cafe, or an office who’s willing to host, let me know, and I can reach out to them with this plan.

I figure if people can get to know each other first, they’re more likely to show up to run together. I’ve learned over the years that not everyone is as extroverted as I am!

And, local vendors stores and other running groups can sponsor the events by offering door prizes or food and drink, so they can get to know us too. This keeps it all local and REAL, because we’re just real people wanting to connect in real life, and helping each other get a little healthier along the way.

I’m in Georgetown Ky just outside of Lexington.

  2. Miss Julie says:

Hi Noel! Thanks for stopping by. Are you a runner? Do you wanna be?

  3. Sharon Parrish says:

You could try Dick’s Sporting Goods or Elite Runners in my area. Both are in Pittsburgh, PA.

  4. Ashley says:

Awww I live in such a small town that it wouldn’t be worth it to start one. We do have a athletic store though. Too bad cause I love your site and the whole Chubby Mommy thing!

  5. Dana says:

I hate running but, like you, love how it makes me feel. Except when it makes me limp which it’s done recently.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to getting back in the running shoes when my heel pain subsides. In the meantime, I think there would be great interest in your club here. I live in Alexandria, Virginia (just outside DC). The local running store is called Pacers.
    Contact info:
    1301 King Street
    Alexandria, VA 22314
    (703) 836-1463
Pacers also operates five other stores in the DC area. They sponsor local races and running clubs and have a solid reputation.

  6. Miss Julie says:

Hi Dana, thanks so much! I have some friends in DC that I love to visit, maybe I’ll call Pacers and see if we can start a club and do a Chubby Mommy Running Club 5k, or just walk around the block. Wanna help me organize? I’ll give you free shirts and water bottles, as soon as I get them!

  7. Miss Julie says:

Hey Ashley, if you give me the name of the store in your town, I can call them and see if they’re interested in starting a club. And if they are, you get free shirts too!

It’s so easy to promise non-existent t-shirts to people, isn’t it?

  8. Melanie says:

Hi! I’m in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, Michigan area and I WANT to join! We have a ton of runners in this area. I started running last year for a 5K that was held in my high school best friend’s mother’s memory…she passed away from breast cancer month’s prior to the race being held to raise money for her health care costs. I’m not built like a runner, it hurts and I swear a lot when I’m doing it BUT I haven’t stopped yet. I won’t ever run a marathon but I keep my butt moving at least…Our local running store is called Running Fit…they have several locations around here and they ROCK!

  9. Heather says:

Started running about a year or so ago and will be completing my first 10K at Zooma Annapolis this weekend. I did it last year also, but had to walk part of it, so I am so excited that I will be able to run the whole thing. I live outside of Philadelphia, PA and would totally be interested in starting something up here. A few running stores to consider would be Fleet Feet in North Wales and Jenkintown Running Company in Jenkintown. I am sure there are others around, but these are the two that I use all of the time. Also, you could look into Born To Run in Springhouse (or it might be Ambler).

  10. Miss Julie says:

Hi Melanie and Heather – thanks for the comments, you are both inspiring! Email me at julieanderson (at) hotmail (dot) com and we’ll figure out how to spread the word in your area, including PR and t-shirts!

  11. Lisa says:

I’m just outside Chattanooga, TN and I think there would be a few women who would love this idea although I’m not much of an organizer I am a joiner if someone else does all the organizing stuff. I am also an active member of our local fitness club and I think they might be a good place. There is also a new fitness center that focuses on women and I really think they would be into it.

  12. Miss Julie says:

Excellent! Thanks Lisa. I’ll work on this in July, after we move. Would love to help get something going in TN.

  13. Nina says:

Hi! Just found you from a thing! This is great! I am faaaaar from a size 0 and just started running. I am doing couch to 5k and while I do enjoy running – 30 kid free minutes – I sure do HATE getting out of bed in the mornings to do it!

  14. Millie says:

I live in hudson county NJ and would love to be a part of a group. Dont know if this is still an option but I sure hope so.

  15. Miss Julie says:

Hi Millie! I’m starting my local club in my new town as we speak, and should have a good template of how it will work in each new town within a month or two. Would you like to volunteer to help start one in NJ? Email me at julieanderson (at) hotmail (dot) come.

  16. Anne says:

Love your site! I live in Delaware, Oh & would love a local group to run with. There are lots of groups in the Columbus area, but as a SAHM with 2 kids, I dont have the free time to travel. I LOVE running, but HATE getting up for 5am runs! I ran a 1/2 & several 5ks, with a 1/4 marathon coming up.

  17. Andrea says:

I live in Eugene, OR too. I’d love to find other slow (11-12 minute pace) women runners in the Bethel area to run with. I can’t make the social on 09/15 since it’s my darling husband’s birthday, but if there are women there who want to run in my neighborhood, let me know!

  18. alex says:

    Hey there!
I’d love to start something up in Houston!!!! I actually run quite a bit (slow but steady) and have run with quite a few groups in town… but all are a bit not for me.
    I’ll do whatever!

  19. Tamara says:

Hi Julie! I recently stopped by Eugene Running Club and saw your posted flyer about the meeting in September, unfortunately I was a few days late! I would looove to get to meet some fellow runner mommas and find somebody to push a jogger alongside 🙂 Can you tell me when you would be planning the next one? Also, I think I my husband and I will be doing the Twilight 5k, maybe we would see you there? 🙂 Anyway, just a fellow runner mom looking for a pacer buddy, socialization and just plain fun. 🙂

  20. Miss Julie says:

Hi Tamara! We’ll do a social every 2nd Wednesday of the month, so I’m planning the next one for October 13th. As soon as I reserve the room, I’ll post it on the events page. Check out Laurie’s blog “The (Mis) Adventures of a Jogging Stroller Mom” she runs in Eugene with her kids too.

  21. Mimi says:

I just replied to you on twitter and now I’m on your website and I love it. I want to start a running club for gals myself. Can’t wait to look at your site and see the inspiration!
I’ve been a runner for a decade and it just changes everything. Nice work!

  22. Miss Julie says:

Thanks Mimi! Let me know if you want to start a little branch of CMRC, I’d be happy to send you shirts and a packet of info, and you can help set one up in your area.

  23. jane says:

What if you’re chubby and slow (10 min. mile) but not a Mom? Or just a step Mom? I should check out the meeting in Eugene in October. Everyone is becoming a hibernating bear on me already and quitting! I’m not putting my 20 lb. coat back on that I lost this summer, thank you very much.

  24. Denise says:

I’m in Fort Eustis, Va (Hampton Roads Area) and I’d love to be part of this is there was one locally. I’ve been really working on my weight loss/exercise/overall health, and I’d love to try running (again). My husband is in the Army, so he’s a runner, and both my teens run cross-country, but they are so much more ahead of me, I give up before trying. I’d love to meet other Mom’s like me.
We have several athletic stores around here…I know that The Runner’s Source is one that I’ve heard lots of good things about from my kid’s coaches.
There are a couple of different locations in our area.

  25. Miss Julie says:

Hi Denise, I’d love to talk to you! Please email me julieanderson (at) hotmail (dot) com and we’ll start a club up out there. I bet we can get several other ladies to join (hey, it’s free and fun!), and I can even contact the Runner’s Source too. Don’t give up! It’s fun to run with the Chubby Mommies!

  26. Lucie says:

Hi Julie, Just heard about your running club on the Runrunlice podcast. I live outside of the USA, but real close, in Westmount, Quebec, Canada. I saw there was a group being created in Laval but that’s a little far from my place. I’d love to start a club here in Westmount (lots of runners, lots of mommies). Tell me if you’re interested and we could email each other.

  27. Miss Julie says:

Yes, Lucie, yes! Would love to help you get started in Canada. I’m bummed I can’t see all the meetup groups coming through all the time, glitch in the system, so please email me! julieanderson (at)

  28. Alexandra says:

I’m near Milwaukee, WI. I have never run in my life. So scared I might die if I try. Can you help me?

  29. Miss Julie says:

Of course! Join us over on the Facebook page and we’ll all support you in your starting! Just click on the Facebook widget to the right, or click through here: –julie

  30. Liz Oberg says:

I’m Bekah’s sister, and I love following your stories! Can I have my own chubby mommy running club of one? =)

  31. Miss Julie says:

Yes, Liz! You’re now officially in the club! Are you on our Facebook page too? Post some pictures up there so we can see you!

  32. Bee says:

Hi there!!! Is Australia too far away!!! ;p Bee
